Malaysia My Second Home (MM2H) is a long-term residence visa programme launched by the Immigration Department of Malaysia in collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture Malaysia. It aims to attract foreign individuals and their families to reside in Malaysia on a long-term basis.

Since its introduction in 2002, the programme has successfully attracted numerous participants from around the world.

2. Eligibility / Requirements

• Age: The main applicant is generally required to be at least 25 years old.

• Financial Requirements: Applicants must demonstrate sufficient assets and income; reports indicate relatively high thresholds for fixed deposits and total assets.
• Financial / Investment Commitment: Typically requires opening a fixed deposit account in a Malaysian bank; some categories may also require the purchase of residential property.
• Residency Requirement: Certain categories require a minimum stay of 90 cumulative days per year in Malaysia.

3. Advantages

• Long-term, multiple-entry visa, ideal for a second home or retirement base in Malaysia.
• Family inclusion: Spouse, unmarried children, and sometimes parents may be included in the application.
• Property ownership: Eligible to purchase residential properties (subject to state and programme category) and enjoy local amenities.
• Tax benefits: Foreign-sourced income remitted to Malaysia may enjoy certain tax incentives (consult a professional tax advisor for details).

4. Limitations / Notes

• While it allows long-term residence, it generally does not permit employment in Malaysia (except under specific categories); a separate work permit is required for employment.
• Requirements vary across states and categories (for example, Sarawak’s S-MM2H programme).
• Although it is a long-term visa, it does not automatically lead to permanent residency or citizenship in Malaysia.

5. Ideal Candidates

• Individuals seeking to make Malaysia their second home, retirement base, or to enjoy an Asia-Pacific lifestyle.
• Those with adequate financial means and liquidity, willing to invest and relocate with family members.
• Applicants not seeking immediate employment or business opportunities in Malaysia but desiring long-term residence, education, healthcare, and quality living

Premium Visa Programme (PVIP)

The Premium Visa Programme (PVIP) is an “investment-based” long-term residence visa launched by Malaysia in 2022. The programme aims to attract high-net-worth individuals, entrepreneurs, and professionals from around the world.

This visa allows holders to reside, work, establish businesses, or study in Malaysia—subject to specific conditions.

2. Eligibility / Requirements

• Must demonstrate a monthly offshore income of at least MYR 40,000 (approximately USD 8,500), or an annual income of MYR 480,000.
• Must place a fixed deposit of at least MYR 1,000,000 in a Malaysian bank.
• No minimum stay requirement — applicants are not required to reside in Malaysia for a specific number of days each year, which is one of the programme’s key advantages.
• Family members can be included: spouse, unmarried children, and parents / parents-in-law.

3. Advantages

• Long-term multiple-entry visa, valid for up to 20 years, with the possibility of renewal.
• Offers greater flexibility than MM2H in terms of employment, entrepreneurship, and education.
• No mandatory property purchase requirement (subject to specific categories or property market conditions) — providing freedom of choice in investment and lifestyle.
• Designed for high-net-worth individuals, ideal for those who wish to establish Malaysia as their Asia-Pacific hub without being bound by residency duration requirements.

4. Limitations / Notes

• High entry threshold — the required fixed deposit and offshore income make it more exclusive than standard long-term visas.
• While it allows residence and work in Malaysia, it does not automatically lead to permanent residency or citizenship.
• Although there is no minimum stay requirement, prolonged absence or failure to meet other obligations may affect renewal eligibility.
• Applicants are strongly advised to consult professional immigration or tax advisors for matters related to investment structure, taxation, family inclusion, and asset management.

5. Ideal Candidates

• High-net-worth individuals, business owners, and professionals seeking to make Malaysia their residence or business base.
• Those who value flexibility—not wanting to be bound by annual stay requirements while retaining the freedom to work or operate businesses in Malaysia.
• Individuals who wish to include family members (spouse, children, parents) under one visa arrangement and are comfortable with the higher financial commitment.
